What was your path to becoming a therapist? What inspired you to choose this profession?
What made me want to become a therapist is my own journey of grief and loss. Whenever I lost my grandparents when I was 12 I found myself in a very dark place as well as members of my family as they were also grieving. I needed someone to talk to although I didn't realize it at the time and I want to be that safe person for others. A person who is able to sit with others in their hurt and help them create their own healing.
In what ways does your personality influence your approach to therapy?
I would say that I'm a pretty fun and laid back guy who enjoys humor. Life is too short to be serious all the time and there are times where I do like to build rapport and comfort with clients through humor. However when needed I am able to get serious and direct as we work on processing the difficult issues and asking the difficult questions.
What are your biggest strengths as a therapist?
I would say one of my biggest strengths as a therapist is my ability to connect with clients as well as seeking to understand their experience. Often times I hear people share their experiences with previous therapists and how it can be a cold or robotic encounter. I am very relationship-oriented and I view therapy as open and honest dialogue between me and a client. I connect through humor but also coming from a place of curiosity to fully grasp what a person is coming to therapy for.
