How has your particular field of specialization evolved in recent years and how has that impacted your work?
Mental problems have often been diagnosed and treated in isolation and without understanding the role of trauma and other developmental factors (such as parental attitudes, peer relationships, learning experiences, and biological predispositions. In the light of extensive research, impact of these factors has become more clear and the reversible course of trauma has been studied in greater depth. For me as a therapist, keeping abreast of these advances is vital and guides me to help my clients.
Are there any recurring themes or issues you’ve noticed as you treat people in your area of specialization, and how has this insight guided your approach?
People are often looking for answers, solutions and plans. All of these are available within the client. Trauma, Depression, Anxiety or Grief overwhelm our ability to focus, plan, evaluate and take action. Therapy helps think better and plan better. If we can get past these obstacles, we can focus our energies on our life goals.
In what ways do your life philosophy and treatment philosophy overlap?
I have experienced the effects of 'conditions of worth' in my life. These are conditions others placed on me and demanded me to be something I was not ('ideal self'). With time and with my own research, I discovered that a person should be accepted and allowed to actualize one's 'real self' or what one is 'cut out to be'. When our family or others impose certain conditions of worth, we experience emotional distress or problems in social or occupational functioning. Thus, a primary goal of therapy is to facilitate self-actualization in order to achieve well-being.

Work History
Hi! This is Shamshad Haider M.Ed. LPC. I received my Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from University of North Texas, a CACREP accredited program in Denton, Texas. I have 10 years of counseling experience with clients from diverse cultures. I help clients experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and grief-related symptoms. I I work with my clients collaboratively to restore growth and well-being. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC # 81047), and national certified counselor (NCC). I practice from a Person-Centered approach to counseling to build a therapeutic relationship. I am trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat mood disorders and EMDR (Trauma Reprocessing Therapy) to help clients recover. I will be your helper in achieving your goals in recovery. I use the evidence based Gottman method for couples counseling. I have worked with couples from many cultures both western and eastern. I provide skills training to individuals and couples in order to remove emotional distress and improve social, academic and occupational functioning. Understanding concepts like dreams within conflicts, bids for attention, emotional bank account and use of repair attempts can help cure relationships. I have seen marriages turn around and seen couples change their minds before divorce. Not every problem is solvable but we can learn to work around many unsolvable problems.
